Off Record vs. Wave
Wave records your numbers.
Off Record works them.
Wave is solid free bookkeeping software. It records transactions, generates P&Ls, and does basic invoicing. What it doesn't do is tell you what those numbers mean for your taxes, your entity structure, or your quarterly payments.
Off Record
A creator-specialized CPA + year-round financial strategy.
Wave
Free bookkeeping, invoicing, and accounting software.
Wave handles your books. Off Record handles your tax strategy.

What Wave does well
Wave tracks what happened. Off Record decides what to do about it.
Wave is excellent free software for recording transactions, generating P&Ls, and reconciling bank accounts. But knowing your net profit number is different from knowing what to do with it. Off Record tells you whether that number justifies an S-Corp, what your quarterly payment should be, and what deductions you're missing.
The free trap
The most expensive mistake is free bookkeeping with no tax strategy.
Many creators use Wave because it's free and covers basic needs. The problem isn't Wave — it's that bookkeeping and tax strategy are completely different disciplines. A creator earning $75,000 who doesn't know about S-Corp elections is leaving $5,000–$8,000 on the table every year. That's not a bookkeeping problem Wave can solve.
Creator income
Wave doesn't know what to do with a gifted product.
Wave can record a bank transfer. It can't tell you that the $600 skincare PR haul you received is taxable income, what its fair market value is, or how much SE tax you'll owe on it without a 1099. Off Record was built specifically for these creator income edge cases.
The tools problem
Wave and Off Record are not competitors — they're complements.
Serious creators use both: Wave or QuickBooks for day-to-day bookkeeping, Off Record for tax strategy, quarterly planning, and the professional decisions that determine what you keep. The only overlap is the question of who does your actual tax filing — and Off Record's CPA partners handle that too.
Keep using Wave. Add the tax strategy it can't provide.
The free Creator Financial Checkup takes 10 minutes and shows you exactly what Wave can't see — entity structure gaps, missed deductions, quarterly exposure, and S-Corp savings potential.
