Off Record vs. Bonsai
Bonsai runs your paperwork.
Off Record runs your tax strategy.
Bonsai is excellent at contracts, invoices, and client management. It doesn't know about gifted products, S-Corp elections, or what you actually owe on your brand deal income. That's what Off Record is for.

a great tax outcome.
The core problem
Bonsai solves the paperwork. Off Record solves the tax bill.
Bonsai does a great job of helping freelancers look professional — contracts, invoices, project management. But none of that determines what you owe in April. A creator-specialized CPA catches the gifted product income Bonsai's invoices never show, plans the S-Corp election that saves $10,000+, and makes sure your quarterly payments are right.
Tax complexity
Creator income is more complex than Bonsai assumes.
Bonsai is built for service-based freelancers with clear client invoices. Creator income — AdSense, TikTok bonuses, gifted products, affiliate commissions, brand deals, UGC retainers — doesn't fit that model. Off Record is built for exactly that complexity, across multiple platforms, states, and income types.
Entity structure
An invoice tool can't tell you when to form an S-Corp.
The decision to form an LLC, elect S-Corp status, or run payroll depends on your income level and state. Bonsai can help you invoice as a sole proprietor, but it won't tell you that an S-Corp election at $80,000 in net profit could save you $6,000 per year in self-employment tax. Off Record's S-Corp calculator and CPA partners do.
Year-round support
Tax strategy happens in July, not January.
Most tax decisions — retirement contributions, depreciation timing, estimated payments — have to be made during the year. Bonsai closes its books at midnight on December 31st just like everyone else. Off Record works with you year-round so none of those windows close without you knowing.
You still need an invoicing tool.
But make sure your tax strategy is covered. The free Creator Financial Checkup surfaces the gaps Bonsai can't — entity structure, missed deductions, quarterly exposure, and S-Corp savings potential.
